Cultdreams
At the very core of Cultdreams is a bold and fearless post-punk band whose songs are wrapped in grunge washes of guitars and shoegaze-y melodic choruses, drowning in reverberated riffs that have been turning plenty of heads in the punk scene. Daring and unflinching across their previous albums; 2017’s Seafoam and 2019’s Things That Hurt plus their debut EP SAD, the pair are back with brand new record Love Won’t Let Me Go & Death Consumes Me, this time finding solace in the dark while ultimately searching for the light.
Where their previous works saw the band’s make up of guitar and drums establish their sound, on their latest effort Cultdreams used their many influences: from their shared bond over The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy, La Dispute and Manchester Orchestra and vocalist Lucinda Livingstone’s rearing on Spice Girls and All Saints, to produce new music that sits outside of their traditional punk comfort zone. Across the record an overwhelming sense of loss and grief in its many forms runs right through its 11 tracks, as does celebrations of queerness and transness, brought forward with the addition of synths, pedals and explorative song arrangements, all while sticking to the pair’s sonic roots.
“The light side of the record was so fun to write from the POV of Cultdreams writing a pop record, and at first I thought the whole thing was going to be a pop Record, but then our usual fashion the darkness reared its head and felt like some of the rawest most interesting songs that had come out.” says Livingstone.
Since their inception in 2014, Cultdreams have received praise from a diverse spread of press including Kerrang! Magazine, Total Guitar, UPSET, The Quietus, Drowned in Sound, Louder Than War, Alternative Press and many more, and have played across the globe with peers Enter Shikari, Pianos Become The Teeth, Foxing, The World Is A Beautiful Place and La Dispute. Having spent the last ten years honing in on their collaborative talents; crafting big, cathartic vacuums of intense emotion, shedding old personal and musical identities and pushing the boundaries of the scene they are home to, Love Won’t Let Me Go & Death Consumes Me signals a re-ignition of creativity for Cultdreams, and marks the long-awaited dawning of a new era.
